The Story of Ms. Sophal Panith

Five-year old Ms. Sophal Panith was buying some dry shells by the roadside, just in front of her house, when she was suddenly knocked down unconscious by a speeding motorcycle. Her grandmother rushed her to the World Mate Emergency Hospital which was about 30 minutes away from their village of Khom Taphon. Sophal suffered severe head trauma and a broken left leg. Sophal was in good spirits when her mother arrived to see her at the hospital. Due to financial difficulties, Sophal’s parents have left their three young children under the care of their grandmother in Battambang, so they can be employed as construction workers in Thailand. Sophal’s injuries were treated free of charge because neither she, nor her family, nor the person at fault could pay. Five weeks after the accident, Sophal was discharged and was on her way to a full recovery. Her mother was so impressed and grateful for the surgeons and medical staff at the hospital.
