Mr. Tun Hun is a devoted and hard-working 42-year old who would do anything for his family. He takes it upon himself to make sure that his wife and each of his six children have something to eat every single day. For his main source of income, he looks over their two-hectare rice field in a town three hours away from Battambang City. While waiting for the harvest season, he explores other means of providing for his family. One day, while scavenging for bamboo shoots in the forest, he stepped on a landmine. The second he heard the clicking sound, he knew he was trapped. In an instant he found his lower right calf separated from his body. He felt like fainting, but he was still alert. In pain, he started screaming for help. He was just about 50 meters from his rice field, but it was another hour before he was discovered and brought to the World Mate Emergency Hospital.
Because of the care he received, Tun survived his ordeal. Today he is waiting for his amputated leg to fully shrink to its normal size, so he can be fitted for a prosthesis leg.
When asked whether he’s worried about his future, Tun accepts the fact that it is going to be more difficult to generate income for his family now that he is no longer able to perform hard labor. Nonetheless, he is very grateful to World Mate Emergency Hospital for saving is life and giving him the hope of walking again. This story is published with permission from Mr. Tun.
